Loss of/Damage to University Property 

As a faculty or staff member, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, trusts you to protect university funds and property. This requires your constant attention to verify that doors, windows, cabinets, and desks are locked; vehicles are operated in a safe manner; equipment is physically secured; and local law enforcement or other emergency personnel are immediately notified when appropriate.  

Property Damage from Fire, Windstorm, Water or Other Nature-Related Events  

Notify the Department of Risk Management during business hours at 848-932-7300 or after hours at rmi@finance.rutgers.edu once the appropriate fire, law enforcement, or emergency personnel have been informed. 

Loss or Damage to University Property or Equipment 

Property or equipment damage or loss due to a cause other than a nature-related event must immediately be reported to local law enforcement.  

When a department has taken reasonable efforts to prevent the damage or loss, the Department of Risk Management may assist with repairs or reimbursement subject to depreciation. However, our department will not reimburse any department for loss of intangible items such as petty cash.

University Vehicles

Damage to university vehicles must be reported on the Online Accident Reporting Form. More information on reporting damage to university vehicles and repairs can be found on the University Vehicles page. 

Portable Equipment 

No commercial insurance covers the loss of portable equipment; therefore, Risk Management administers self-insurance funds to replace the unused life of lost equipment and furnishings. Reimbursement is conditional and depends on the department’s ability to demonstrate that it has taken reasonable measures to prevent theft. Contact the Department of Risk Management & Insurance for further information. 

Employee Personal Property 

Employees are responsible for their personal property at all times. Rutgers does not reimburse for damage to or loss of personal items kept in offices, desks, or vehicles, either on campus or when traveling on university business. Employees are encouraged to carry a homeowner’s, auto, or tenant’s policy, or specific property insurance to cover risk of damage or loss.
