Capital preservation, flexibility, open-mindedness, intellectual curiosity, and long-term thinking are the pillars of our investment ethos. To support our goal of having a healthy endowment, we prioritize Rutgers’ partnerships with the best investment managers in the world.
A healthy endowment enables Rutgers to

fulfill its institutional mission;

support specific programs, projects, and priorities that advance its strategic plan;

enhance students’ educational experiences and professional prospects;

accelerate research into some of most perplexing problems and pressing needs of the 21st century; and

strengthen the state’s economic, social, and cultural development.
Objectives
The endowment’s primary purpose is to achieve a total return averaging a spending rate of at least four percent plus inflation and costs. A long-term return need of just over 7%. Returns in excess of this percentage support the endowment’s long-term growth. For this reason, the endowment’s time horizon is considered infinite.
