Student Health Insurance

Rutgers University requires full time and all F&J Rutgers-sponsored visa students to waive or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each semester before the deadline. Please visit University Health Plans to either waive or enroll.

If you failed to waive before the deadline, you will be enrolled in the SHIP and responsible for paying the premium on the term bill, even though you have other health insurance.

Paying the premium on the term bill is not enrolling; you should complete the enrollment form online before the deadline to finalize the process.

Please note that students in “online-only” degree programs or non-matriculated students registered for online courses only are not eligible to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plans.

    New or Recent NJFC Applicants

If you have applied recently or intend to soon apply for NJFC, please be aware of the SHIP waiver deadlines.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, was informed by NJFC that the NJFC approval process takes at least 60 to 90 days after application submission. The NJFC application procedures and timeline are available here

Please note that if your NJFC application is not approved by the SHIP deadline and you do not have other coverage, you will be automatically enrolled after the deadline and will be responsible for the nonrefundable premium.

What to Expect During the NJFC Application Process

During the application review, NJFC might contact you for additional information. If contacted, respond as soon as possible so as not to delay your application.

Typically, NJFC will then send you a final letter stating your eligibility and effective date of coverage. The health insurance information will follow. The effective date of coverage must show September 1, xxxx to be eligible to waive SHIP for the Fall semester, and February 1, xxxx to be eligible to waive SHIP for the Spring semester.

Please allow four business days from the receipt of your online SHIP waiver form confirmation email for the SHIP premium to be removed from your term bill.

You must waive or enroll each semester before the deadline at www.universityhealthplans.com
