Student Health Insurance
Rutgers University requires full time and all F&J Rutgers-sponsored visa students to waive or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each semester before the deadline. Please visit University Health Plans to either waive or enroll.
If you failed to waive before the deadline, you will be enrolled in the SHIP and responsible for paying the premium on the term bill, even though you have other health insurance.
Paying the premium on the term bill is not enrolling; you should complete the enrollment form online before the deadline to finalize the process.
Please note that students in “online-only” degree programs or non-matriculated students registered for online courses only are not eligible to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plans.
You do not need to wait for the term bill to access the waiver form. If you have comprehensive health insurance, you may complete the waiver form each semester before the deadline.
- Visit www.universityhealthplans.com to waive, view deadlines dates/insurance rates.
- Follow the “after completion of the waiver form” guidelines about the removal of the health insurance premium on the term bill.
- If you failed to waive before the deadline and did not complete an enrollment form, you will be automatically enrolled and you will be responsible for paying the premium on the term bill even though you have health insurance.
- For waiver inquiries after the deadline, you must visit www.universityhealthplans.com for specific guidelines

If you failed to enroll before the deadline and did not complete a waiver form, your enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) will be processed. The enrollment after the deadline will take a few weeks, which could delay access to your health insurance card. Be proactive and enroll before the deadline; avoid having to pay out of pocket expenses for medical care and prescriptions and then seeking reimbursement.
Waiver appeals are no longer accepted for academic year 2021-2022. Deadline for appeals has passed.
Fall 2022: September 23, 2022 Spring 2023: February 10, 2023
Failure to waive by the deadline will result in an automatic enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and you will be responsible for the premium on your term bill EVEN IF YOU HAVE OTHER HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE.
You may complete the online SHIP waiver or enrollment form at University Health Plans.

Waiving the Student Health Insurance Plan With NJFC
If you have New Jersey Family Care (NJFC), you can waive the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each semester. To waive SHIP, visit University Health Plans before the waiver deadline to complete the waiver form. Be sure to have your NJFC health insurance card handy.
New or Recent NJFC Applicants
If you have applied recently or intend to soon apply for NJFC, please be aware of the SHIP waiver deadlines.
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, was informed by NJFC that the NJFC approval process takes at least 60 to 90 days after application submission. The NJFC application procedures and timeline are available here.
Please note that if your NJFC application is not approved by the SHIP deadline and you do not have other coverage, you will be automatically enrolled after the deadline and will be responsible for the nonrefundable premium.
Deadline for open enrollment for SHIP ends on:
September 23, 2022 – fall 2022 semester
February 17, 2023 – spring 2023 semester
We cannot extend the waiver deadline date for SHIP.
What to Expect During the NJFC Application Process
During the application review, NJFC might contact you for additional information. If contacted, respond as soon as possible so as not to delay your application.
Typically, NJFC will then send you a final letter stating your eligibility and effective date of coverage. The health insurance information will follow. The effective date of coverage must show September 1, xxxx to be eligible to waive SHIP for the Fall semester, and February 1, xxxx to be eligible to waive SHIP for the Spring semester.
Please allow four business days from the receipt of your online SHIP waiver form confirmation email for the SHIP premium to be removed from your term bill.
You must waive or enroll each semester before the deadline at www.universityhealthplans.com.
University Health Plans, Inc. also offers a plan for dental and/or vision that can be purchased regardless of whether you are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.
The Office of Student Health Insurance is a separate department from the health centers on campus. For on-campus medical care, you may contact the relevant health and wellness centers:
