Frequently Asked Questions

Step 1: Log into the Nelnet Refund Portal using your NetID and password. You will be required to authenticate your student account using Duo authentication.
Step 2: Select your school affiliation (legacy Rutgers or Rutgers Health) from the home screen. Verify your school affiliation before beginning your enrollment. You will not receive your refund if you select the wrong school.
Step 3: Confirm your identity by text or email.
Text: Enter your 10-digit U.S. mobile number and click “Save.”
Email: Select “Save.” You will automatically receive an email confirmation code from Student ABC in your ScarletMail inbox.
Step 4: Enter your text or email confirmation code to proceed.
Step 5: Select your refund method by clicking the “Bank Account (Direct Deposit)” option.
Step 6: Provide the account information for the checking or savings account where you would like to receive your refund and click “Save.”
This should not be debit/credit card information.
Step 7: You are now enrolled in direct deposit and will receive your refunds faster and more securely.

No. You need to set up direct deposit specifically for your student refunds.

You will receive an email indicating when your student refund is processed. If you signed up for direct deposit, your student refund will be deposited into your bank account within 3-5 business days. If you are not signed up for direct deposit, then a paper check will be mailed to the student's address on file within 7-10 business days.

We recently outsourced student refund check printing from Rutgers University to Nelnet, so your refund check will look different.

Please cash or deposit your refund check within 90 days of issuance.

Please cash or deposit your student refund check immediately. Failure to do so within 90 days will cause it to be canceled. Unclaimed refunds may be sent to the State Division of Unclaimed Property, and any Title IV financial aid funds will be returned to the applicable program(s).

If your student refund check is not cashed or deposited within 3 years, your funds will be turned over to the State as Unclaimed Property. Please respond immediately to the notice.

The refund may have been issued to a third-party vendor, scholarship sponsor, or Parent Plus loan borrower.
If you did not enroll in direct deposit and/or have an international (non-U.S. or Canadian) official permanent address on file, your refund will be canceled and credited to your account within 5-7 business days. Please visit refunds.rutgers.edu to enroll in direct deposit for future refunds.

You have 30 days to cancel or reduce any portion of your student loan(s) after disbursement. Please visit this link for guides on viewing, accepting, adjusting, and rejecting awards.

If you voluntarily withdraw from all courses after the add/drop period, you may receive a partial reduction of tuition and fees (student, school, and technology) according to the date of withdrawal as follows:
Fall 2025 Semester
- September 2 - September 15: 100%
- September 16 - September 29: 80%
- September 30 - October 13: 60%
- October 14 - October 27: 40%
- Thereafter: 0%
Spring 2026 Semester
- January 20 - February 2: 100%
- February 3 - February 16: 80%
- February 17 - March 2: 60%
- March 3 - March 25: 40%
- Thereafter: 0%
