Capital Equipment Account Codes

When buying moveable capital equipment for Rutgers University—such as specialized research machinery, servers, or large office equipment—please use account codes 67041 through 67050, which are regularly audited to ensure proper capitalization. Additional details about these codes are available below.

What Qualifies as Capital Equipment?

Capital equipment is defined as any moveable equipment with an original cost of $5,000 or more and a useful life of one year or more. This threshold applies per working unit, not to the total value of the purchase order, as illustrated in these examples:

  • Capital Equipment: One server costing $6,000. (Meets the per-unit threshold)
  • NOT Capital Equipment: Three laptops costing $2,000 each on a single $6,000 purchase order. (Does not meet the per-unit threshold)

Moveable capital equipment includes large, heavy machinery that requires special equipment to transport, provided it is still technically moveable. If an item is permanently attached to a building or land, it is not considered Moveable Capital Equipment.
