Nayland Smith is the senior vice chancellor of finance and administration and chief business officer/chief financial officer for Rutgers–New Brunswick. He manages the two billion dollar financial operation for Rutgers–New Brunswick. In addition, he oversees strategic efforts involving growth strategy, capital planning, human resources, and information technology. Looking to the future, he is working to develop a data strategy capability for the New Brunswick campus, where data will serve as a commodity integral to strategic decisions.

Nayland is a seasoned finance, strategy, and operations executive with over 25 years of experience across many industries, including finance, marketing, and education. In the earlier period of his career, he worked with multi-billion-dollar financial firms Dow Jones, Bridge Information Systems, and Brown Brothers Harriman, where he managed a team that developed and managed financial products. During his time in the marketing industry, he managed the development of Bank of America’s online banking experience, and he led financial and product efforts that culminated in a company acquisition. As a financial professional, he has led financial planning and analysis efforts for acquisitions, asset sales, and new business ventures. 

He holds a bachelor of science degree from Rutgers–New Brunswick, a master’s degree from Harvard, and a doctorate of business administration from Rutgers Business School.
